Rebuilding Together.

When disaster strikes, it hits the whole community. But hope rebuilds one family at a time through personalized planning and care. Find out what’s possible, After the Storm

Chances are this is your first disaster. It’s not ours. We know it’s hard to rebuild and recover. But we’re here to help. Some of us come from your community. We were hit by the very same storm. Some of us have experienced disasters in other Michigan communities and we know about recovery. We are teachers and engineers and artists and experts in construction. We have one thing in common: we care. We’re here to help you rebuild.

After the Storm.

We work with one family at a time

to restore lives after a disaster.

Our case managers are carefully trained using a proven model for disaster recovery. Our goal is to help you to achieve your goals for recovery. After the lights and sirens are gone and the initial cleanup is over, our work ramps up. We rebuild, remediate, clear debris, connect people with local resources, assist with utilities and furnishings, and so much more. Look to see if After the Storm is working in your area.

After the Storm is a 501 (c)3 nonprofit organization launched by the Michigan Conference of The United Methodist Church in 2022. We launched in response to a flood in Detroit and Southeast Michigan. That same year, we also responded to a tornado in Gaylord, working with more than 100 families to rebuild and recover.

The Conference quickly became the expert in long-term disaster response and recovery in Michigan, trusted by federal, state, and local partners. We felt the best way to sustain this expertise was to form an independent organization. We work with people and organizations of any religious persuasion, and all donations are tax-deductible.

Before that, the Michigan Conference had assisted with long-term disaster recovery projects from Houghton/Hancock to the Great Lakes Bay region, including recovery from a major dam breach in Midland.

Collaborating for Lasting Change.

After the Storm is the perfect partner for communities in recovery. Local organizations know local needs, and After the Storm assists by bringing the much-needed disaster recovery expertise

We all deal with disasters every day. To have someone on your side that you can trust and be transparent with- there is no better feeling.

With their help, we have been able to assist families impacted by the tornadoes in a fraction of the time it would have taken us to do the same work on our own. They kept all of their work focused on our community, hiring case workers locally, and ensuring funding decisions were made by local leadership. Should we ever be impacted by a similar event in the future, we will be sure to partner with After the Storm
